Work history

Plum

Senior iOS Engineer

June 2026 to September 2026

Worked on Plum’s flagship iOS app, a money app for saving and investing.

Lloyds Banking Group

Senior Software Engineer

April 2026 to June 2026

Hired into the Bristol office as the first engineer of a mobile team Lloyds was building out, working within the group’s mobile banking estate.

Uptick

Senior iOS Engineer

July 2024 to March 2026 · London, remote

Uptick builds software for fire safety and compliance teams across Australia, the UK and the US. Led native iOS development across the full product lifecycle, from discovery and architecture through implementation, performance and release, including observing technicians in the field to understand end-user workflows directly.

  • Maintained and evolved a legacy Objective-C API integration built on a schema-driven, GraphQL-inspired design, mapping responses through a custom serialiser into a mirrored Core Data model to support local edits, diffing and synchronised write-back, with licensing rules, permissions, feature flags and extensibility modules layered on top; the offline-first experience depended on getting that diffing and synchronisation correct.
  • Led adoption of Swift 6 across the codebase, delivered two major features and a large refactoring exercise, introduced a CI pipeline covering build, test and release, and moved the codebase to a modular architecture for faster builds and parallel feature work.
  • Delivered a full revamp of the Task Details screen with the team, aligning iOS with Android, surfacing critical information at a glance and introducing contextual banners for missing parts, required accreditations and access-detail mismatches, reducing on-site delays.

The Very Group

Principal Software Engineer

November 2021 to June 2024 · Liverpool, remote

The Very Group is a UK digital retailer running large-scale white-label e-commerce platforms for millions of customers across the UK and Ireland, under brands including Littlewoods. Worked across three white-label iOS apps responsible for over £100M in monthly revenue. The queue library began as a product problem: marketing, used to what the web can do, asked for more and more overlapping prompts, and both the iOS and Android apps grew a nest of boolean state whose complexity climbed with every request. Presenting it at Tech Talks showed that sharing a fix is what scales it.

  • Key contributor to a ground-up rebuild, modernising large UIKit and Objective-C codebases in Swift and SwiftUI to establish a scalable, testable foundation while backend systems addressed technical debt. Replaced web-view-heavy functionality with native SwiftUI, including rebuilding the core Home and Search experiences.
  • Designed and built a reusable library for competing, interrupting UI flows (the “NASCAR problem”), using Combine and OperationQueue to declaratively serialise UI sequences with safe cancellation and re-queuing under interruptions such as deep links or connectivity loss, and presented that work internally as “Enqueued UI” at a Very Group Tech Talks session.
  • Implemented a CI pipeline and rolled out a modular codebase for faster builds and scalable feature teams.
  • Awarded The Very Group’s internal DCX Certificate of Appreciation, ‘Innovative’ award, 2022.

Nash Property Solutions Ltd

Founder · Software Engineer

November 2018 to February 2021 · Cardiff

A property inspection business founded and run day to day, and the iOS app it ran on, designed, built and launched in-house. Clients were homeowners and estate agents. The lesson from running it: when it is your own money, every feature has to earn its return.

  • The problem worth solving was not the app, it was making a thorough inspection fast enough that it always got done properly, by operators who had not built it. A mid-term audit came down to one wide photograph of a room and a few toggles, ‘evidence of smoking’ and the like, repeated room by room. The app produced the finished report as a PDF branded for the client it was going to, and filed it into the company’s monday.com board, where an automation flagged the work complete and the client held scoped access to pull the report and comment on it. An audit took minutes and was hard to get wrong.
  • End-of-tenancy inspections were heavier: four photographs of each room, one per wall, then individual items such as a sofa or a kettle captured with their condition recorded, mostly as toggles and multiple choice with free text only where it could not be avoided. Same output, a branded PDF for an estate agent or a homeowner.

Freelance contract roles

2014 to 2019

Short and medium term contracts across consumer, healthcare, payments and media.

Maido, Lead iOS Engineer. Sole engineer delivering the Help 4 Carers NHS app from scratch, scoped for three months and extended to five.

PayPoint, Lead iOS Engineer. Designed and delivered PayPoint’s first iOS payments SDK in Objective-C (iOS 8+) alongside the Android counterpart, open source at the time; Pay360 has since moved to a closed-source SDK.

Duplia, Lead iOS Engineer. Rebuilt the Tagstr social app, about 80% of it new code, the hardest problem being queued background upload of large files that kept the app usable during upload and resumed from the stage it had reached after the app was killed.

Mkodo, Senior iOS Engineer. Stability and code quality across a suite of gaming apps, expanding automated test coverage through TDD.

Cookpad, Senior iOS Engineer. UI and feature refinement on a global recipe-sharing app.

Earlier roles

PNI Digital Media, Senior iOS Engineer, nearly three years. Native retail apps for clients including Costco, covering personalised photo products and print orders.

Intohand, Junior then Senior iOS Engineer. Dozens of projects, sole engineer on several, including Tribesports, a social network for sportspeople, where nine months of solo work produced an app that could restore full state after a battery failure so marathon runners could swap a battery mid-run and carry on.

Vistair, Junior iOS Engineer, under a year. Docunet, an airline document delivery platform providing digital pilot manuals.

Cardiff Medical Apps Ltd, co-founder. Medical software built with a surgeon, from offices in the Cardiff Medicentre at the Heath Hospital, with an NHS commissioning client.

Async Digital

Lead Software Developer

January 2026 to present · Cardiff, remote

Run alongside employed roles, testing whether one engineer working with AI agents can ship software that holds up.

  • Shipped Audient, an on-device semantic search and transcription app, to the Mac App Store.
  • Released Iris, an open-source Swift deep-linking package.
  • Wrote The One-Person Software Studio (forthcoming from Packt), on where agent-built software holds up and where it fails.

Selected engineering work

Three problems from three codebases: serialising competing UI flows, modernising a large legacy codebase without stopping delivery, and typed deep-link routing in SwiftUI.
Six case studies and a four-part internals track on routing, state restoration and navigation under adversarial conditions.
Open-source Swift package, MIT. Routes incoming URLs into typed SwiftUI navigation without hand-rolled plumbing for each new screen.
Open-source Swift package. Serialises competing transient UI through an actor, emitting lifecycle events via AsyncStream. The Enqueued UI work described above, rebuilt on Swift Concurrency.
Planning-poker server (Vapor)
Vapor API with passkey (WebAuthn) sign-in for an iOS planning-poker client, built in 2024 to take Swift to the server.
